Your timer, explained

Start or change a rest

Tap Start rest to begin your remembered duration. Tap any of the three favorites to start that duration immediately. Tap the large duration to open the picker, choose a duration with the Digital Crown, then confirm with Start rest. Leaving the picker without confirming makes no change.

Set defaults and favorites

Open Settings to set Default rest or tap a favorite. Choose a duration from 15 seconds to 10 minutes in 15-second steps, then tap Save favorite. Saving a favorite does not start a timer.

Add time, finish early, or discard a mistake

During a regular rest, +15s extends its deadline, up to 10 minutes of requested countdown time; logged rest can be longer while waiting for Start set. Start set ends the rest and records the elapsed time when you begin exercising again. Undo start appears for the first five seconds; Discard rest is available after that for accidental starts and is excluded from workout stats. At zero, the planned-time cue shows “Ready when you are.” Your rest remains open until Start set, or until you end the workout. +15s starts another fifteen seconds within the same rest. Reminder nudges are on by default, once per minute for up to ten minutes after each cue; turn them off in Alerts settings. They follow watchOS notification and Focus settings.

Start your next rest

At zero, Ready when you are keeps your current rest open. Tap Start set when you actually begin; after that set, tap Start rest again. Opening or dismissing a notification does not start your set, and the app never starts another rest automatically.

Use a watch-face complication

Add the circular or rectangular RestTap complication to a compatible watch face. It opens the app. Tap Start rest after opening it. The complication does not display a live countdown or start a rest by itself.

If an alert is missing

  1. Check RestTap’s notification permission on your watch. The iPhone Watch app may also offer notification controls for your watch.
  2. Check Sounds & Haptics, haptic alerts, Silent Mode, and any active Focus. Allow RestTap in the Focus you use for workouts if you want its alerts there.
  3. Wear and unlock your watch. A locked, removed, restarting, or otherwise unavailable watch may present alerts differently.
  4. In RestTap Settings, tap Test alert and lower your wrist for five seconds. The clearly identified test is separate from a real rest and is disabled while a rest is running.
  5. If the app reports a scheduling error, use Check / retry alert in Settings. If permission is denied, first change it in system settings.

Completion alerts follow Apple Watch settings. RestTap does not bypass Focus or promise a cue in every device state. When alerts are unavailable, the app labels the countdown as visual-only. Apple’s sound and haptic guidance explains the system controls.

Optional workouts and Apple Health

Choose Start workout on the main screen to begin your local session. Start rest after a set; Start set confirms you have begun exercising again. Zero only cues you; it never starts or logs a set automatically. End workout opens a wrap-up with a rest/exercise donut and View summary as the main action; Start workout is secondary. The breakdown includes a rest timeline with workout time on the horizontal axis and rest length on the vertical axis, average rests in 10-minute windows, rest totals, plan comparisons and heart-rate trends when readings exist. Each rest belongs to the window in which it started; empty windows have no rests. These local charts work without Apple Health. Exercise time is estimated as session time outside logged rests, including any unlogged pauses. Choose an optional rest-to-exercise ratio target between workouts in Workout options: 1:2 means one minute of rest per two minutes exercising. The app saves that target with the workout. Trends compares actual rest percentages across sessions with white squares for the target used in each workout. Targets are personal references with no automatic alerts or prescribed ideal ratio. Workouts also links to trends across your saved sessions. Apple Health recording is off by default. A local session does not start a workout in Apple Health.

Workout options includes Apple Health, an optional personal heart-rate target, and heart-rate cues. Health data may be unavailable, delayed, or restricted by permission. A dash means there is no recent reading. RestTap cannot tell which Health read permissions you granted.

If you enable Apple Health recording, explicitly starting a RestTap workout records a genuine strength workout and can replace another active workout on the watch. Leave recording off when using RestTap alongside Apple’s Workout app. End workout stops RestTap’s recording and attempts to save it to Apple Health; the local summary remains available if that save fails.

Smart rest is optional and uses your selected duration as a minimum, then looks for 10 seconds of recent readings at or below your personal target. Its maximum is the selected duration plus 90 seconds, capped at 10 minutes. Before the cue, +15s extends both limits. After the cue, +15s gives a fixed fifteen-second countdown in the same rest. Missing readings use the maximum-time cue. Targets are personal references, not a prescription or measurement of muscle recovery.

The heart-rate timeline numbers and highlights logged rest windows, including time after the planned cue. The breakdown separates planned and logged duration and shows time after the cue. If you forgot Start set, open Details → Review rests in a completed summary, then tap a rest to shorten or remove that local entry. This updates local graphs and totals; it does not change your Apple Health workout. Touch the app’s graph to inspect a reading. First-target timing is shown only with a reading near rest start and no gaps over 15 seconds before the target is observed. “Settled rest” counts observed time below your target and excludes long sensor gaps. Shorter/longer comparisons describe your chosen timer plan. They do not determine that you rested too little or too much physiologically.

Saved state, clock changes, and offline use

The visual countdown comes from a saved deadline, so leaving and reopening the app does not reset the rest. Timezone changes do not change that deadline. Deliberately changing the system clock can change the remaining time. The app does not require an internet connection or a RestTap account.

If a save error appears, the requested change was not applied. Check available watch storage and retry. If a saved timer cannot be restored, the app explains the problem; starting a new rest saves new state.

Purchases and privacy

At launch, purchases will be handled through Apple. The App Store listing will show the final price and availability. For an Apple purchase issue, use Apple’s purchase support or contact us for app help.

Read the privacy policy for local storage and support correspondence details. Optional workout summaries stay on your watch. Apple Health reading and recording require your choice and system permission.
